X-men first class - the movie that basically wasn't

I'm a fan of comic books and action movies so I should love this kind of stuff, right?
I would really, really like to but X-men first class (link to IMDB) is just not a very good movie and maybe surprisingly it's not very bad either.

The primary problems are that the characters are fairly un-interesting and especially the blandness of Professor X (James MacAvoy), the guy supposed to be the main character, is mind-numbing.
We don't get much more from the young superheroes that supposedly should be central to the whole this-is-the-beginning-concept. The first class mentioned in the tittle of this epic load of anesthetic anesthesia: they sit around most of the time 'hanging out' and the black guy with the awesome superpower gets himself killed. Somehow that's hardly unexpected.
On the good side there's Kevin Bacon as Sebastian Shaw, the main bad guy and Michael Fassbender as Magneto. Both are fairly convincing and their parts are so well written that they're actually there. Some of the others I'm not so sure about.
Except for the diamond blonde the evil bad ass henchmen for example have no lines and stay mostly in the background, scowling.
So basically this is not a movie to watch for the deep character acting but what about the special effects? Yeah well actually that's more of the same: there seems to be a lot of effort put into them, they work flawlessly and they are sort of not bad. Yet somehow they're just not that impressive.
I think that there two major reasons for this excessive mediocrity: Someone - the director Matthew Vaughn presumably - made a decision to go for the understated feel and secondly there's a huge difference in what works in a comic book or graphic novel and what works in a movie. What I have found is that live action characters need more depth than what they most commonly have in comic books. On the movie screen it's really not quite enough to be red and look awesome.
The good: could be much worse.
The bad: unusually forgettable.
